Reflective Pieces with Meaning
My earliest memory of jewelry is tied to Aunt Grace- my Great Aunt who was always dressed perfectly in matching shoes, purse and jewelry. When she and Uncle Steve came to visit, I’d always say, “Let’s look at your jewelry Aunt Grace” and she’d take it out of a fine quality jewelry roll or “travel case” and tell me a little about each piece.
I received my first fine jewelry piece when I was 4 years old – a small gold ring with a little diamond set in the gold. Much to my mother’s dismay, I gave it away to my best friend. Even then, I knew the value and the meaning behind a nice piece of jewelry.
Eventually, after a circuitous route, I had a window of opportunity to study jewelry design and manufacture in Florence, Italy and I jumped on it. I continued taking other courses and studying for and receiving my GG (Graduate Gemologist) Certification from GIA (Gemological Institute of America). I pursued a career in the jewelry industry by working in a luxury jewelry store in retail sales and then in a jewelry design studio creating custom designs.
I’ve always loved jewelry and I believe that jewelry is both timeless and transcends age-appropriate rules. Any piece of jewelry can be worn at any age. And if you outgrow or inherit something that’s not your style, it can be repurposed into a new creation.
